Outdoor Screws: Which Types are Best?

outdoor screws

Why use outdoor screws? If you’re working on an outdoor project you need screws that won’t rust. A screw that has corroded or become rusty is liable to break, and will cause you problems further down the line.

Not all screws are made for outdoor use, so it’s important to choose the right types of outdoor screws for your project. Here we look at 4 different types which could be suitable for you depending on your needs.

Stainless steel screws

Most screws are made of steel, but ordinary steel is not resistant to corrosion in the same way as stainless steel. Stainless steel screws are more expensive, but for outdoor projects, it’s an expense that you need to accept, unless you want your project to fall apart a few months down the line.

Compared with carbon steel (also known as mild steel), stainless steel is less brittle, and more resistant to corrosion. Carbon steel combines iron and carbon, whereas stainless steel combines iron with chromium, as well as nickel, which increases resistance to corrosion. There are many types and sizes available.

Galvanized screws

Galvanized screws have a zinc coating which makes them resistant to corrosion. They are especially suitable for use on treated lumber, because the chemicals used to treat lumber can have a corrosive effect on steel screws.

These outdoor screws are coated in zinc by one of two methods: electro-plating, or hot-dipping. The latter produces a thicker layer of zinc. Electro-plated screws should be avoided on certain types of treated lumber, as it can produce black stains around the screw. These screws should be used with galvanised bolts.

Silicon bronze screws

Silicon bronze screws are used mostly in the marine industry. They are comprised mostly of bronze, and a small amount of silicon. These outdoor screws are capable of withstanding constant exposure to salt water.

Decking screws

Decking screws are designed to resist corrosion. They are usually made of stainless steel and may be coated in ceramic, plated in zinc, or may contain high copper content. These outdoor screws may be used for decking, fences, sheds, or other outdoor timber constructions that are repeatedly exposed to the weather and rain.
